# Can an AI assistant buy from your business yet?

By [**Ian McGavin**](https://www.strataigize.com/about/team/ian/), Co-Founder & CMO · Published September 8, 2026 · 5 min read

If you sell advice, retainers, or custom builds, an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini acting for a buyer) cannot tap Buy now on a $25,000 pilot and have that be honest. The Monday job is to publish a price band, what you will not do, and one bookable next step. A retailer with a real catalog may later need Universal Commerce Protocol, the checkout language Google and Shopify want stores to speak. A services firm that starts there spends a quarter wiring a storefront it does not have.

You sell advice. A retainer or a custom build is the same problem. An AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini acting for a buyer) cannot tap Buy now on a $25,000 pilot and have that be honest.

The useful question is what that assistant should be allowed to start, and what a human still has to confirm.

Monday: put a price band, a scope, and one calendar on a public page. Then stop. You do not need a checkout rebuild to get the next meeting.

## If you sell expertise, skip the storefront

A growth retainer, an [AI Opportunity Audit](https://www.strataigize.com/offers/ai-opportunity-audit/), or a custom agent build is not a product with shipping. There is no honest Buy now for a $25,000 to $60,000 pilot. The assistant’s job is to decide you are the right firm and to start a conversation you are willing to have.

What buy means on a services site:

- The assistant can read a price band and one plain refusal.
- The assistant can book a [30-minute audit](https://www.strataigize.com/audit/) or hand a human a link that does.
- The assistant can start a small set of read-only jobs, if you have chosen to [make those jobs agent-callable](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/should-your-business-be-agent-callable/): systems that will run when the assistant asks, without moving money.
- The assistant cannot issue refunds, move money, or export your client list.

That last line is the risk model. If you connect a job, a call will arrive. Connecting it does not decide whether the job should exist. We allow status, availability, published documents, and search over what is already public. We refuse payments, destructive edits, and bulk personal export. Drafts (a proposed booking, a proposed ticket) go to a human.

If a vendor tells a law firm or an agency to rebuild checkout as an AI strategy, that vendor sold the wrong job. You are a business an assistant should shortlist. You are not a cart.

## If you sell products or rooms, then checkout language matters

A retailer already on Shopify or [Google Merchant Center](https://developers.google.com/merchant/ucp/) is in the blast radius of a shared checkout language whether that retailer asked for it or not. Google and Shopify launched [Universal Commerce Protocol](https://ucp.dev/) (UCP) on 11 January 2026 at NRF: the checkout language Google and Shopify want stores to speak for catalog, cart, identity, checkout, and orders. The business stays the merchant of record. Tax, shipping, and returns stay under your rules.

The assistant will only complete a cart where the merchant has published an offer that matches the site a human sees. A stale product becomes a chargeback.

What to hire, in order:

1. A truthful catalog and price that match the live site.
2. A readiness pass: which products an assistant should be allowed to buy, which should stay human-only (high-consideration, regulated, or easy to mis-order).
3. Payment and identity you can defend. “The assistant used a saved card” is not a controls program.
4. A measurement plan that separates assistant-started orders from human-started ones, so you do not scale a leak.

If your customer already shops inside ChatGPT, evaluate OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) next: checkout that happens inside that chat. OpenAI’s [6 October 2025 post](https://openai.com/index/introducing-apps-in-chatgpt/) is the current product name for ChatGPT apps, tools that live inside that assistant. That is a different job from UCP. Do not treat the two as synonyms.

This is specialist commerce work, not a blog plugin. We will take it for a client who already has the catalog and the margin. We will not sell it as a brand exercise.

If you sell machine-priced access to an API, there is a separate door called [x402](https://x402.org/): pay-per-request, authored by Coinbase and now a Linux Foundation project. If you sell a $7,500 audit, x402 does not belong in the conversation. Homepage volume figures move daily. We will not lead a business decision with those figures.

If a vendor slide lists UCP, ACP, and x402 at once, ask which job each name does. Most of those names are not the same product.

## A one-week readiness check, without a rebuild

Do this before anyone writes an adapter.

**Day 1 to 2: the shortlist test.** Ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini the question your buyer actually asks, ten times each, on a fresh session. Record whether you appear, the price each assistant invents, and the work it claims you do. Invented prices are a page problem, not a model problem.

**Day 3: the start test.** Give the same assistants your homepage and ask each one to begin the engagement. If an assistant cannot find one calendar, one price band, and one scope it can repeat, you are not ready. [Agent-led growth](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/agent-led-growth/) is the name for that gap: getting chosen before the first call.

**Day 4: the permission test.** List every job you would be willing to let a stranger’s assistant start. If the list includes money movement, stop. If it is empty, you are not behind. You have chosen not to attach a key to a prompt, which is a valid decision.

**Day 5: the checkout test, only if you sell inventory.** If you have a cart, open the [UCP docs](https://ucp.dev/) and [OpenAI’s apps documentation](https://developers.openai.com/apps-sdk). If you do not have a cart, close those tabs.

Cloudflare has a separate pile of settings that decide whether assistants can even read you. Those are on our Pro plan and already configured for this site. [Pay Per Crawl](https://developers.cloudflare.com/ai-crawl-control/features/pay-per-crawl/what-is-pay-per-crawl/) is a private beta on Enterprise. We cannot sell you a switch we cannot flip.

## Who should hire, and what it costs

Hire a checkout-readiness pass when you have a catalog an assistant could honestly buy, or when procurement is already asking which checkout language you support. Expect the same bands we publish for applied AI: $7,500 for a two-week opportunity audit, $25,000 to $60,000 for one bounded pilot, then a production retainer from $8,000 a month if something has to stay alive.

Hire the [agent-led growth work](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/agent-led-growth/) when the failure is earlier: you are invisible or unclear, and the assistant is sending the meeting to someone else. That work looks like [search work that includes AI answers](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/ai-seo-services/), truthful offer pages, and only then a tightly scoped set of agent-callable jobs.

Do not hire a package that puts you on every checkout spec if you do not sell a product an assistant should pay for. The spec pages are public. Paying us to restate them is how a quarter disappears.

If you want the shortlist and start tests run on your own domain, [book the audit](https://www.strataigize.com/audit/). If the question is build versus buy on the software itself, use [the 2026 decision rule](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/build-vs-buy-ai-agents/).
