# App Marketing Agency Options, Costs and Where Each Fails

By [**Ian McGavin**](https://www.strataigize.com/about/team/ian/), Co-Founder & CMO · Published January 28, 2025 · Updated September 13, 2026 · 7 min read

An app marketing retainer starts near $6,000 a month, and only one of the five best-known North American shops will tell you that kind of number at all. That is not the worst thing about a ranked shortlist. The worst thing is that no ranking tells you which of three things is leaking on your app: the store listing, the paid buying, or the paywall with the retention behind it. Pick the wrong one and you find out six cohorts later.

A short list of published prices is not enough to choose an app marketing agency. [Bamboo](https://www.growwithbamboo.com/) published $6,000 a month when we checked on August 3, 2026. It has since repositioned again, to an advisory board of operators from Stripe, Uber and Notion, and it now publishes no figure at all. Moburst, [Gummicube](https://www.gummicube.com/) and [M+C Saatchi Performance](https://www.mcsaatchiperformance.com/) publish nothing either. Rechecked September 13, 2026: we are the only firm in this comparison you can price without booking a call. We publish a band, engagements from about $6,000 a month, and the app accounts we do our best work with are spending nearer $25,000 a month on media. Those are our own figures, from our own book.

Three scopes decide the fit: app store optimization (ASO) covers the store listing, user acquisition (UA) covers paid buying, and in-app purchase (IAP) monetization covers the paywall and revenue after install.

Bamboo used to be the default answer for consumer apps. It scaled paid social for Uber, DoorDash, Lyft, Stripe, Dropbox, Coursera and Headspace, and the client list is still on the site. The people are the same operators. What they sell now is judgment for a team that already runs the accounts, so a founder who briefs them expecting an agency is buying something else entirely, at a price they will have to ask for.

## Three scopes, and which one is leaking

Every name on a top-ten list sells some combination of those three scopes. A ranked list cannot tell you which one is leaking on your app, and it cannot tell you what fixing it costs. Reputation is real and it answers a different question. Moburst has published cases like over 90% growth in organic downloads in under a year for Reddit and 27% organic download growth in 90 days across Discovery’s portfolio of branded apps, not the Discovery+ streaming product ([Moburst](https://www.moburst.com/)), and it was [founded in 2013](https://www.moburst.com/our-story/). That record says nothing about whether your bottleneck is a product page you have never tested.

Most teams already know which scope is untested. They buy media anyway, because media has a budget line and a product page test does not.

## Six ways to buy it, and the one published price left

| Option | What it costs | Who it fits | Where it fails |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Full-service growth retainer | From about $6,000/mo, commonly to $15,000; the accounts it repays carry nearer $25,000/mo of media (our own band) | Subscription or IAP apps where listing, buying and paywall all move together | Stalls the moment the vendor cannot edit the store listing or the paywall |
| Enterprise performance media | Custom quoted, no public price ([M+C Saatchi Performance](https://mcsaatchiperformance.com/about-us/), 13 cities, [400+ staff](https://www.businessofapps.com/marketplace/mc-saatchi-performance/)) | Multi-market apps with procurement and regional media plans | A boutique-sized budget buys boutique-sized attention inside a big shop |
| ASO specialist | No public price ([Gummicube](https://www.gummicube.com/about/), 40+ staff, an Airship Group division, [DATACUBE](https://www.gummicube.com/aso-tools/)) | Organic store visibility is the named constraint | Cannot buy the media or change the paywall, so the ceiling arrives fast |
| Creative-led full service | No public price ([Moburst](https://www.moburst.com/), 45+ awards) | Creative supply is the ceiling and volume is the fix | The fee scales with production output, not with payback |
| Fractional or advisory operator | No public price since its September 2026 reposition; was $6,000/mo ([Bamboo](https://www.growwithbamboo.com/)) | Your team runs the accounts and needs senior review | Nobody is in the account; every execution hour stays yours |
| In-house UA hire | Fixed headcount, carried whether the spend grows or not; no shop in this comparison publishes a comparable band | Continuous spend on one or two platforms, long horizon | One person rarely covers buying, creative supply and measurement at once |

Five of those six prices only exist inside a sales call, and the count got worse this month rather than better.

## Small paid accounts hand most decisions to the platform

On a light paid budget, the account gives you three things to set: the budget, the creative, and the conversion the platform optimizes toward. Allocation on the Google side is automated by design, so anyone quoting you hours for placement work there is quoting hours that do not exist, and the same automation shift already repriced search buying generally ([what Google advertising costs now](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/google-advertising-cost-guide/)).

The store-side work is finite and you can list it. Write down the product page treatments you have never tested. A short list gets finished by an ASO specialist or a well-tooled in-house owner, and the tool stack is buyable directly ([App Radar features and pricing](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/comprehensive-guide-to-app-radar-features-pricing-and-use-cases/)).

## The network will run your account for free

That is the strongest case against hiring anyone, and it is true. It also has a price. The party choosing your bid reports whether the bid worked, and its own attribution is usually the only read you get.

Fix it without a retainer. Agree the measurement before the spend: a geo holdout window, a payback horizon in days, and one revenue number both sides read at the end of it. Competitive spend dashboards sit on licensed estimate models rather than anyone’s ledger, and the vendors selling them publish no list price, so treat those figures as a market shape and never as your result.

## Paid buying pushes volume into whatever your paywall already converts

Media does not create willingness to pay. So the scope you skip decides what the spend is worth. Look at where the money moved in 2025: total in-app purchase revenue reached $167 billion, up 10.6% year over year, non-game IAP passed games for the first time on 21% growth, and game IAP grew 1.3% to approach $82 billion, while downloads went almost nowhere at nearly 150 billion, up 0.8% ([Sensor Tower, State of Mobile 2026](https://sensortower.com/blog/state-of-mobile-2026)). Revenue per user moved and volume did not.

Now price the mistake. Six months of a $6,000 retainer buying installs against a paywall nobody was allowed to touch is half a year of cohorts that never repay, and the fee is the small part of that bill. The founder finds out in annual planning, when the subscription line does not match the install line.

The in-house version of that mistake costs more and moves slower. A team that hires a full-time buyer while media sits well under $25,000 a month carries a salary all year to run a budget one person could run in a day a week, and the store listing, the part actually leaking, still has nobody testing product pages. Downloads industry-wide moved 0.8% in 2025. Nobody was going to buy their way out of that.

## Where we are the wrong app marketing agency

Under roughly $25,000 a month in media, most of the available gain sits in the store listing and the paywall, and a full-service retainer for that work burns budget the product needs more; above it, the buying, the creative supply and the measurement stop fitting inside one person’s week and three coordinated vendors start arguing about whose number is right. That upper case is the one our [mobile app marketing agency](https://www.strataigize.com/services/mobile-app-marketing/) team is built for: store listing, paid buying and paywall inside one program, one number reported.

We are the wrong choice for a single-market free app with no monetization decision to make, and for a team that wants a headcount replacement. Three things we refuse: reporting installs and impressions as the result, guaranteeing a cost per install, and taking an account where we cannot change the store listing or the paywall. If you are hiring north of the border, the market shape and the published prices differ enough that [we broke Canada out separately](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/best-mobile-app-marketing-agencies-canada/).

## Fee structure and timing, since nobody publishes either

Percentage-of-spend pays the vendor for volume, which misprices the job when the repair is a paywall change. Performance fees need an attribution model both parties trust, and the network usually owns that model. A flat retainer plus an agreed payback measure is the arrangement that survives a bad month.

One vendor can hold both ASO and UA, and the reason is mechanical: organic store traffic and paid traffic land on the same product page, so a conversion test that lifts one lifts the other. Split the vendors and you split the test calendar, then spend a quarter arguing about who caused the change.

Timing splits the same way. Store listing tests read in weeks, because they are conversion tests on live traffic. Paid reads on payback, which needs cohorts old enough to mean something, usually a quarter before anyone defends a channel in a review. Anything reported inside the first 30 days is a leading indicator.

Until this month Bamboo’s $6,000 was the one fee in this comparison you could read without a call, and it bought senior review of accounts your own team still ran. A $6,000 retainer elsewhere buys someone inside those accounts. The same price bought a different purchase, and the shortlist never labelled which one you were getting. Now that Bamboo has taken its figure down, the comparison is worse: you cannot tell the two purchases apart without booking two calls.

Do the counting before the calls. Write down the product page treatments nobody has tested, then the paywall changes nobody has been allowed to ship. That list is finite, you can read it in an afternoon, and it names which of the three scopes is leaking. A directory ranking never resolves that, and neither does a fee range you had to negotiate to see. The money in this market moved to what a user pays after installing, which is the part a media budget does not touch.
