# What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

By [**Ian McGavin**](https://www.strataigize.com/about/team/ian/), Founder & CMO · Published June 1, 2026 · Updated September 7, 2026 · 8 min read

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is work intended to improve how a brand appears in AI-generated answers from systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It combines normal SEO, useful content, accurate business information and evidence other sources can verify. Measure mentions and citations alongside qualified enquiries. No answer length, markup package or content edit guarantees that an engine will select your page.

An AI answer can introduce a buyer to your business before they visit your site. GEO work asks whether that introduction is accurate, whether it points to useful evidence, and whether it brings the right people to you. A citation is one observation in that journey; it is not a sale.

![A live Google results page for this query, showing the AI answer layer above the classic organic results](https://www.strataigize.com/blog/real/google-serp-geo.webp)

**Key takeaways**

- Google AI features build on normal Search eligibility. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- An organic ranking and an AI citation measure different appearances. Track both against relevant buyer questions.
- Clear answers, accurate claims and useful sources help a reader assess your business. They do not guarantee selection by an AI engine.
- Judge AI referrals by qualified enquiries and sales. A conversion rate from another company’s study is not a forecast for yours.

## Why GEO matters now

GEO matters when your buyers use AI answers to research a problem, compare vendors or shortlist a purchase. Those answers can include links, summarize a source or give the reader enough information to continue without visiting it. Your search reporting needs to distinguish those outcomes.

[Google explains](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) that AI Overviews and AI Mode may search related subtopics while developing a response. Their models, responses and supporting links can differ. That is why a single ranking check or one answer screenshot cannot establish your overall AI visibility.

Start with the questions that matter to your buyers. Record which businesses and sources appear, check whether your own information is accurate, and measure what happens when someone reaches your site. This gives you a business case grounded in your audience rather than a general claim that all AI traffic converts better.

## What is generative engine optimization, exactly?

Generative Engine Optimization is a practitioner label for improving a business’s visibility and representation in AI-generated answers. Work can include the website, its supporting evidence and relevant information published elsewhere. Systems in scope include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

GEO and SEO overlap. Core SEO also supports visibility in Google’s AI features. GEO adds emphasis on questions such as “when a buyer researches this topic, are we in the answer, what does it say about us, and which sources support it?” An answer can link to your page and send a visit, or inform the buyer without a click.

Some AI search systems may look up related subquestions while developing a response, as Google describes for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Others may use a different retrieval process. Cover the buyer’s main question and useful follow-ups, then make the evidence behind each answer easy to check.

## How AI engines decide what to cite

You cannot inspect every engine’s source-selection rules. You can make your pages accessible and useful, then observe which sources appear. For Google AI features, [ordinary SEO remains the foundation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features); there is no special schema or additional technical requirement. The practical content checks below help a buyer evaluate what you say. For the retrieval process, see [how generative engine optimization works](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/how-generative-engine-optimization-works/).

| Content check | What it helps the reader establish |
| --- | --- |
| **Direct answers** | State the answer early, then explain assumptions and exceptions. Use the length the question needs. |
| **Independent references** | Link relevant reviews, reporting or other evidence that a buyer can check outside your own claims. |
| **Current information** | Update facts when products, prices or conditions change. Keep the date and scope clear. |
| **Accountable authorship** | Show who wrote the piece and their relevant experience, without inventing expertise or credentials. |
| **Original evidence** | Explain the method, sample and limitations behind a result so the reader knows what it can support. |

## Where AI answers actually pull their sources

An answer about your business may use your own site, independent reporting, reviews, community discussion or another publisher’s comparison. The relevant mix depends on the question and the engine. Review the sources that appear for your actual buyer questions before deciding where to spend effort.

For each source type, ask a different question:

- **Review sites and comparisons.** Are the details accurate, and can a buyer see how the comparison was made?
- **Community discussions.** What questions or objections do people raise that your site does not answer?
- **Videos.** Would a real demonstration explain the product or process better than another paragraph?
- **Your own site.** Can someone verify your services, prices, experience and results without guessing?

There is no universal percentage of GEO work that belongs off-site. Correct your own information first, then pursue relevant independent coverage on its merits. Our [AI SEO tools comparison](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/best-ai-seo-tools/) can help you choose how to monitor the sources and questions that matter.

## GEO, AEO, SEO: what is the difference?

They overlap, and the distinctions are simpler than the acronym soup suggests. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is earning rankings in traditional search. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is earning the direct answer in featured snippets, voice results, and “people also ask.” GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is earning citations inside generative AI answers.

GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. A meaningful share of AI citations still trace back to pages that rank well organically, so technical health, crawlability, and authority still matter. The mistake is treating GEO as a separate channel you bolt on later. It is the same content engine, tuned so the model can read it as well as the searcher.

If the acronyms are the thing tripping your team up, we unpack all three at length, including which layer to fund first and how to measure each one, in [AEO vs GEO vs SEO](https://www.strataigize.com/insights/aeo-vs-geo-vs-seo/).

One [observational study of 21,143 citations](https://arxiv.org/html/2604.25707v2) found higher average influence scores for pages containing statistics, definitions and comparisons. Its authors explicitly distinguish those associations from causal effects. The useful lesson is to provide evidence a reader can assess, not to expect a fixed citation lift from adding a statistic.

## How to start with GEO: five moves

You start with GEO by making your content easy to extract, easy to trust, and easy to find off-site. Five moves, in order:

1. **Answer the buying question directly.** Put the useful answer where a reader can find it, followed by the evidence and exceptions. There is no required word count or guaranteed citation effect.
2. **Make business facts consistent.** Reconcile your name, services, location, prices and relevant profiles. Correct contradictions a buyer might encounter.
3. **Earn relevant independent coverage.** Contribute useful work to the publications and communities your buyers use. Avoid fabricated reviews or paid praise presented as independent judgment.
4. **Publish evidence you can explain.** Share a useful result, demonstration or comparison with its method and limitations. A number without that context can mislead.
5. **Maintain the facts.** Update pages when something substantive changes. Preserve original publication dates and use an updated date only for a real refresh.

## How to measure whether GEO is working

You measure GEO with three signals, because no single dashboard captures it yet. Skip them and you are flying blind, which is how most teams talk themselves out of the channel before it pays off.

1. **AI referral traffic.** Group recognizable assistant referrals in GA4, then track qualified enquiries and eventual sales. Missing referrers and small samples limit attribution; compare the same date windows and conversion definitions before drawing conclusions.
2. **Share of voice.** Across a fixed set of buyer questions, how often does an engine name you versus a competitor? That percentage is the closest thing GEO has to a ranking, and it is the number our [AI SEO and visibility reporting](https://www.strataigize.com/services/website-optimization/ai-seo-visibility-reporting/) service tracks weekly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and monthly on Perplexity.
3. **Self-reported attribution**, the most underused of the three. Add a “How did you hear about us?” field to your audit and contact forms with AI options. It is the one source that catches the citations analytics miss, and it is a one-line change. If you want a baseline of where you stand today, that is exactly what an [AI-visibility audit](https://www.strataigize.com/audit/) is for.

## Common GEO mistakes

The fastest ways to waste a quarter on GEO, in the order teams usually make them:

- **Over-investing in schema while ignoring off-site mentions.** Markup is hygiene; the 2026 evidence does not support it as a citation driver.
- **Faking freshness with date bumps** instead of real updates, which engines increasingly see through.
- **Keyword-stuffing internal links.** Jamming a service link onto every matching phrase helps no one and reads like spam to both people and models. Links should be few, relevant, and useful.

## How we proved it on our own site

Our [AI-SEO case study](https://www.strataigize.com/case-studies/ai-seo-changed-everything/) records a late-2025 push on the previous site, published 2025-12-10. ChatGPT-attributed sessions rose from 38 to 474, with leads attributed to ChatGPT. Those are different measurements from a specific period. They show a channel worth investigating, but do not isolate which edit caused the change or predict another business’s conversion rate. Our [managed GEO service](https://www.strataigize.com/generative-engine-optimization/) keeps those distinctions in its reporting.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

No. They share a foundation, but the goal differs. SEO earns a ranking a human clicks; GEO earns a citation inside an answer the human reads. You can rank #1 and still be left out of the AI answer, which is why GEO needs its own attention.

### Does schema markup help GEO?

A little, as hygiene. Clean structured data helps engines parse your page, but the 2026 evidence does not support schema as a major citation driver. Put your effort into answer-first content, real data, and third-party mentions instead.

### How long does GEO take to work?

There is no reliable universal timetable. Crawling, indexing, the question being asked and competing sources all affect what appears. Agree on a baseline and a review cadence, then judge changes across repeated observations rather than one answer.

### Which AI engine should we optimize for?

Start with the systems your buyers use and the questions that influence a purchase. Compare answers across more than one engine, since sources can differ, and keep the underlying content useful wherever it is found.

### Can we do GEO in-house?

The fundamentals, yes. Answer-first rewrites, an entity foundation, and a freshness cadence are all learnable. The harder, higher-value work, earning third-party mentions and publishing original data at a steady clip, is where most teams bring in help.

### How is GEO different for B2B?

B2B research often involves several people, technical requirements and a longer buying cycle. Make scope, pricing assumptions, evidence and procurement information easy to check. Track qualified conversations and assisted sales; a citation or visit alone does not establish buying intent.
