Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

Definition

The canonical answer.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand visible, accurately described, and cited inside AI-generated answers from systems like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode. Where SEO optimizes for ranked links, GEO optimizes for being retrieved, trusted, and quoted by the models that now answer buyers directly.

Worked example

In practice.

A buyer asks an AI assistant which agencies to shortlist. The engines answer from the sources they retrieve and trust: directories, roundups, reviews, and pages with quotable claims. GEO work earns presence in those sources and structures your own pages so the engine can lift an accurate answer with your name on it.
