Definition
The canonical answer.
A Google preferred source is a publisher a signed-in user has marked as preferred in Google Search, which raises that source’s prominence in the user’s Top Stories and related result surfaces. For brands, accumulated preferred-source selections are a durable, user-granted visibility asset that competitors cannot buy back with ads.
Worked example
In practice.
A publisher runs a campaign asking loyal readers to add it as a preferred source. Readers who do so see materially more of that publisher in their own results afterward, which compounds: the audience chose the visibility, so no algorithm update or ad budget change removes it.
