Definition
The canonical answer.
Structured data is machine-readable markup, most commonly JSON-LD script blocks, that states what a page is about in schema.org vocabulary: an organization, a service, a product with a price, an FAQ, an article. It removes guesswork for search and AI systems and is a precondition for rich results and reliable entity understanding.
Worked example
In practice.
A pricing page that states its figures in Product and Offer markup gives engines an extractable price instead of prose to interpret. The practical rule is server-rendered markup that mirrors the visible content exactly: schema that claims what the page does not show is a liability, not an optimization.
