App Intelligence Tools in 2026: The Post-Consolidation Guide

App intelligence tools estimate downloads, revenue, usage, and advertising activity across the app stores, which is data your own analytics cannot see because it covers competitors. The market consolidated hard going into 2026: Sensor Tower absorbed data.ai and sells a broad enterprise suite by quote, while Appfigures, AppMagic, Apptopia, MobileAction, and Similarweb cover lighter budgets and adjacent needs. We run Sensor Tower for client benchmarking. This guide covers what each platform does and what it actually costs.

Your analytics stack tells you everything about your own app and nothing about anyone else’s. App intelligence tools fill that gap: they model downloads, revenue, active users, and ad activity for every app in the stores, so you can benchmark competitors, size markets, and see whose user acquisition (UA) is working. This guide covers the platforms that matter in 2026, what happened to the ones that disappeared, and what the survivors cost.

What app intelligence data is (and is not)

App intelligence platforms build estimates from consumer panels, store data, and modeling. That makes them directional by design: the numbers will not match a competitor’s internal dashboard, and they do not need to. They exist to answer market questions your first-party stack cannot: how big is this category, who is growing, where is their traffic coming from, and which creatives are they funding.

They are not attribution tools. Your own installs, campaign return on ad spend (ROAS), and event data come from a mobile measurement partner (MMP), the tool that tells you which ad drove which install. We cover that side in our MMP guide. A serious growth team usually runs one of each.

The consolidation that changed the buying decision

Several names on older shortlists now belong to other companies. Check the product you can buy today, not just the historical brand.

  • data.ai (formerly App Annie) no longer exists as a product. Sensor Tower acquired it in March 2024 and folded its datasets into the Sensor Tower platform through 2025. The old “Sensor Tower vs. data.ai” decision is closed.
  • App Radar sold to SplitMetrics and is now offered as App Radar by SplitMetrics, positioned inside an app store optimization (ASO) suite rather than as standalone market intelligence.
  • Storemaven is not a verified current buying option. Zynga acquired it in 2022. Its former domain now serves unrelated content, so use current store-testing products rather than treating old reviews as an active offer.

What remains is one heavyweight, a handful of focused independents, and one web-analytics giant with an app module.

Sensor Tower combines app performance, usage and advertising research with Pathmatics and web insights. The vendor requests a sales conversation rather than publishing a rate card. Vendr’s own procurement guide, checked September 5, 2026, reports most contracts in its data at $30,000 to $150,000 annually, with extensive enterprise deployments exceeding $250,000. Those are third-party observations with varying scope, not vendor list prices. The current source does not substantiate the $74,415 median or 38-purchase count previously shown here. Our Sensor Tower review explains how to scope a quote.

Appfigures separates Analytics & ASO from Market Intelligence on its pricing page. The $9.99 entry price belongs to Analytics & ASO; it does not buy the full competitor dataset. Market Intelligence has its own plans, including Scout at $599.99/month. Compare the actual data and export allowances rather than treating every published plan as interchangeable.

AppTweak comes at the category from the ASO side: keyword and creative optimization first, market intelligence layered on with its AppDNA classification. Essential is $99 on monthly billing or $79/month billed yearly. Our AppTweak review covers the 2026 plan structure in detail.

AppMagic, Apptopia, and MobileAction each hold a niche. AppMagic is popular with games teams for fast download and revenue estimates. Apptopia leans on SDK detection, which reads which third-party code a competitor’s app ships with, plus its data feeds. MobileAction pairs ASO tooling with ad creative intelligence. Compare their coverage and a quote for the same scope; undisclosed prices do not establish which is cheaper.

Similarweb is the pick when web traffic and app performance need one view, such as marketplaces and fintechs whose funnel crosses both.

How to choose, by the decision you are funding

We pick tools for clients based on the decision the data has to support, not the feature list.

  • Market entry or investor sizing: Evaluate Sensor Tower and relevant alternatives against the countries, categories and history you need. Check estimates against known first-party results where possible; a vendor name alone does not establish accuracy.
  • Competitive UA teardown: Sensor Tower’s Ad Intelligence or MobileAction. You want share of voice by network and the actual creatives competitors fund.
  • ASO with market context: AppTweak or Appfigures. Full market intelligence platforms are overkill if keyword and conversion work is the job.
  • Own-portfolio reporting with light competitive context: Appfigures. The free tier and the $45 to $150 per month range cover most indie and small-studio needs.
  • Games: AppMagic or Sensor Tower’s GameIQ, depending on budget. Sub-genre and monetization-model classification matters more in games than anywhere else.

Whatever you pick, treat the estimates as directional and calibrate them once against a property whose real numbers you know. Category-level benchmarks and where they come from are covered in our mobile app KPIs guide.

What the raw store data actually contains

Every platform above models on top of the same two public surfaces: App Store search and Google Play search. What those surfaces return is the floor on what any vendor can sell you, so it is worth knowing before a demo rather than after.

We ran that check ourselves. On September 14, 2026 we pulled five category queries (“idle rpg”, “habit tracker”, “language learning”, “running tracker”, “note taking”) against both stores through DataForSEO’s App Data search API, US storefront, English, asking for 30 results each. That returned 624 listings, 124 from Google Play and 500 from the App Store. Three results are worth carrying into a sales call.

The two stores do not return comparable depth. Google Play respected the request and returned between 14 and 30 results per query, varying with how much inventory the query actually has. The App Store returned exactly 100 every time, including for “running tracker”, where Google Play found 14. An identical count across queries of very different breadth is a page cap, not a count of how many apps compete for the term, so treat any “competing apps” figure sourced from App Store search as the cap it is.

Field coverage is asymmetric, and neither store carries what most buyers assume. Across the same 624 listings:

Field in search resultsGoogle PlayApp Store
Title, app ID, price, free or paid, icon100%100%
Rating value98%96%
Developer name100%0%
Review count0%96%
Description0%0%
Category0%0%

Google Play gives you the developer and withholds the review count. The App Store does the reverse: review counts on 96% of listings and no developer field at all. Neither returns a description or a category. A competitor table showing all six columns at once is joining at least one more call per app onto the search result, which is where per-record cost and refresh lag enter.

Rating precision is not comparable across stores either. Google Play returned one decimal place (4.3, 4.5). The App Store returned five (4.84259, 4.8587). A cross-store rating gap of a tenth is inside the rounding on one side of the comparison.

None of this makes the platforms above less useful, and the modeling on top is most of what you are paying for. It does tell you what to ask when you scope a quote: which fields are observed and which are estimated, and the refresh interval on each. The run above cost under two cents and took about a minute, so you can repeat it against any store-data API before the first sales call.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is app intelligence data?

Modeled estimates of app downloads, revenue, active users, engagement, and advertising activity across the app stores, built from consumer panels, store signals, and SDK detection. It covers every app in the market, including competitors, which is what separates it from your own analytics.

How accurate are app intelligence estimates?

Directionally strong, never exact. Estimates are modeled, so absolute numbers can be off while trends, rankings, and relative comparisons stay reliable. Calibrate against an app whose real numbers you know before trusting any platform’s absolutes.

Are there free app intelligence tools?

Sensor Tower and Appfigures both offer limited free tiers, AppMagic has a free plan, and MobileAction publishes free ASO tools. Free access covers top charts and basic profiles; competitive usage and ad data sit behind paid plans everywhere.

Do I need app intelligence if I already have an MMP?

Yes, if competitive or market questions matter to you. An MMP measures your own campaigns and installs; app intelligence estimates everyone else’s. They answer different questions and mature growth teams run both.

What to Buy at Each Budget

The 2026 buying decision is simpler than it used to be: Sensor Tower if the budget supports enterprise market intelligence, Appfigures or AppTweak if the job is portfolio reporting or ASO with context, and a games-focused pick like AppMagic where sub-genre data earns its keep. Budget for the data you will use. Compare the same modules, market coverage, history, export rights and billing period before comparing the subscription totals.

If you would rather have the answers than run the tooling, our mobile app marketing services include competitor benchmarking, market sizing, and UA research as part of the engagement.
