Definition
The canonical answer.
Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) is the discipline of increasing the share of visitors who take a valuable action, using research, experimentation, and measurement rather than taste. Done honestly it is a statistics practice: hypotheses from evidence, tests sized to detect real effects, and verdicts that admit what a test cannot say.
Worked example
In practice.
Session replays show visitors stalling at a long form. The team tests a three-field version against the original with a pre-computed sample size. Completion rises with the effect above the minimum detectable threshold, so the change ships; a smaller observed lift would have been reported as inconclusive, not victory.
